Role Overview:
This internship position is part of the Research and Development team at IMI Adaptas, working on advanced components for mass spectrometry. Electron multipliers are critical to the performance of most mass spectrometers and is an area where IMI Adaptas is a recognized market leader. Maintaining this leadership requires ongoing innovation, including the design, testing, and performance analysis of new electron‑multiplier concepts.
As the intern, you will support these efforts by assisting with prototype development, testing, and data analysis. This role offers hands‑on experience in a fast‑paced R&D environment and the opportunity to learn from experts in analytical instrumentation.
Supervision and Mentorship
The intern will receive mentorship, regular check-ins, and development opportunities throughout the internship
Work Environment: Onsite
Key Responsibilities:
- Work closely with a Senior Mechanical Engineer to design new detector concepts and test fixtures.
- Work with a team of engineers and scientists on novel manufacturing techniques that combine legacy methods with new and innovative approaches including 3D printing of advanced materials.
- Develop and execute experimental plans to document the analytical performance of prototypes
Learning Objectives/What You Will Gain
- Move an advanced electron multiplier concept from design and manufacturing to prototype performance and testing.
- Mass spectrometry theory. Mass spectrometry is currently a $6B dollar market and is projected to grow to over $10B by 2030. Many mass spectrometry companies have large facilities in Massachusetts.
- Advanced CAD techniques.
- 3D printing experience with advanced materials and ceramic manufacturing/machining.
- Test and measurement electronics, data analysis as well as advanced metrology techniques for validating high precision parts.
- Learn basic operating principles of electron multipliers and mass spectrometers. Participate in other group projects as time permits and opportunities arise.
Education and Experience
- Currently pursuing or completing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical thinking.
- Experience with CAD, 3D printing, computer programming (e.g. Python), experimental design and data analysis are desired.
Pay range: $24.00/hour
