Role Overview:
The Manufacturing Engineering Intern will support production of mass spectrometry components at IMI Adaptas. Our electron multipliers and filaments are used across a wide range of analytical instruments, and ensuring reliable, high-quality manufacturing is essential to staying competitive in this market. Continuous improvement, process optimization, and daily production support all play an important role in achieving these goals.
The Manufacturing Engineering Intern will gain hands-on experience working directly on the production floor, supporting initiatives to improve processes, documentation, efficiency, and product quality.
Supervision and Mentorship
The intern will receive mentorship, regular check-ins, and development opportunities throughout the internship
Work Environment: Onsite
Key Responsibilities:
- Support continuous improvement projects on the electron multiplier (EM) and filament production lines, focusing on yield improvement, scrap reduction, and process stability.
- Work closely with manufacturing engineers to develop and implement monitoring methods and metrics (such as cleanroom or equipment health indicators), depending on the project needs.
- Help automate data collection, reporting, and visualization using tools such as Excel or basic scripting.
- Support daily production needs by gathering data, troubleshooting minor issues, and communicating observations to the engineering team.
- Participate in team meetings and schedule periodic intern presentations.
- Support the implementation of new manufacturing processes, including verification, operator training, and follow-up assessments.
Learning Objectives/What You Will Gain
- Hands‑on experience in a manufacturing environment supporting precision production of mass spectrometry components.
- Practical experience building dashboards, KPIs, or automated tools for tracking production metrics and environmental conditions.
- Skills in writing clear and effective process documentation such as SOPs and work instructions.
- Ability to analyze data, interpret trends, and translate findings into practical manufacturing solutions.
- Experience working directly with operators and engineers in a collaborative and fast‑paced environment.
- Communication and presentation skills from multiple intern presentations and team interactions.
Education and Experience
- Currently pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, electrical engineering or related field.
- Strong interest in project management and process development.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), comfortable with creating Pivot tables in excel.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical thinking.
- Experience with CAD, 3D printing, and familiarity with Python or C++ / PLC Programming.
- Understanding of sensors plus serial communication and data logging / formatting.
Pay range: $24.00/hour
